Morocco's industrial sector has seen a record 801.5-billion-dirham turnover in 2022, Minister of Industry and Trade Ryad Mezzour announced on Wednesday in Rabat.

Presenting the results of the 2023 edition of the «Barometer of Moroccan Industry», Mezzour highlighted that this remarkable performance is mainly due to the contribution of the food industry (23.1%), the chemical and semi-chemical industry (23%), and the automotive industry (17.8%).

This sector, whose number of enterprises has doubled in ten years, recorded an added value of 212.4 billion dirhams, production of 738.7 billion dirhams, and investments worth 33.9 billion dirhams in 2022.

The category of enterprises less than 20 years old contributed more than half of the exports, while enterprises less than 10 years old exported 100 billion dirhams.

In terms of employment, Minister Mezzour noted that the sector witnessed a remarkable growth of +8.8 percent, reaching 870,759 jobs in 2022, a 2.4-fold increase compared to 2012.

In this regard, the minister highlighted significant growth in three sectors in terms of employment, namely the aerospace industry (+21%), the automotive industry (+13%) and the textile and leather industry (+10%).

He stressed that industrial employment in 2022 based on gender showed a relative balance between the two sexes, with 40% of women employed and 13% holding positions of responsibility.

The data on social capital in the national industrial sector showed that national capital accounted for 71.5 percent of the total capital in the industrial sector, while capital of foreign origin accounted for 28.5 percent.

The periodic industrial research conducted by the Ministry of Industry and Trade is an important national source of data on Moroccan industry.

This «barometer» enables an up-to-date analysis of the situation of the various industrial sectors, allowing an accurate diagnosis of their performance and their contribution to the national economic fabric.

For this edition of the research, for the years 2021 and 2022, 120 field researchers were mobilized and 10,891 industrial enterprises were targeted, with a response rate of 80%.

A digital platform was developed for this purpose to collect data and extract the results of this version of the research.
