The Islamic Military Counter Terrorism Coalition (IMCTC), based in Saudi Arabia, is intensifying its support for the Malian army. Launched in March 2015 by Saudi Prince Mohammed bin Salman, the organization held a program in Bamako from May 22 to 24 aimed at «enhancing national capabilities to combat terrorism financing and money laundering».
The program featured a specialized conference titled «Financial Investigations into Terrorism Financing and Money Laundering Crimes», which brought together several experts. Discussions focused on financial tracing methods, analysis of illicit networks, and relevant international experiences, according to an IMCTC statement.
Meanwhile, the Malian Ministry of Defense announced that Coalition experts conducted this training. The transitional government in Mali accuses armed opposition movements, supported by Algeria, of «committing terrorist acts».
On a practical level, the Royal Armed Forces (FAR) of Morocco are also contributing to strengthening Malian military capabilities. A delegation of FAR experts, led by Brigadier General Abdelghani Mouhib of the FAR General Inspection, was received on February 17, 2025, at the Malian Ministry of Defense and Veterans Affairs to hold the inaugural meeting of the Mali-Morocco Joint Military Commission. This cooperation is further demonstrated by the training of 165 Malian soldiers in parachuting in Morocco in April.
Following Mali, the IMCTC organized military training yesterday in Nouakchott. This initiative «is part of the Coalition's program in the Sahel states, aimed at strengthening the preparedness of national security and military personnel in developing effective strategies and enhancing their skills in risk assessment and goal formulation», highlighted the IMCTC in a statement.
As a reminder, the Inspector General of the FAR, General Mohamed Berrid, visited the headquarters of the Islamic Military Counter Terrorism Coalition in Saudi Arabia last March.
