Hassan Masiky for Washington / Morocco News Board --The year was 1994, the place was a small hotel by Union Station in Washington DC, and my breakfast companion was the late Moumen Diouri. As Amnesty International USA North Africa expert, I had the good fortune to meet such remarkable personality in a serene and humane environment away from political pressures and without hidden agendas. That was my first, and not last, meeting with this historic figure of the Moroccan opposition in exile during the late King Hassan II era. Moumen, a companion of Abderrahim Bouabid, Sheikh Al-Arab and Mehdi Ben Barka, was an enigmatic personage full of mystery and contradictions. He passed away in Rabat on Wednesday at the age of 74 .
