As Director General of the National Agency for Water and Forests (ANEF), Abderrahim Houmy is representing Morocco at the 20th session of the United Nations Forum on Forests (UNFF), held from May 5 to 9, 2025, at the UN headquarters in New York. According to an official statement, «this session primarily focuses on reviewing progress in implementing the United Nations Strategic Plan for Forests 2017–2030».
Discussions also cover «enhancing the socio-economic and environmental services provided by forest ecosystems, mobilizing funding, strengthening scientific and technical cooperation, and improving governance frameworks for sustainable forest management».
In this context, Morocco presented its Forests of Morocco 2020–2030 strategy as an «integrated model» for addressing global challenges such as climate change, biodiversity loss, and the resilience of rural communities. In his address, Abderrahim Houmy emphasized the strategy’s contribution to the Sustainable Development Goals, particularly those related to poverty reduction, ecosystem restoration, and access to clean and sustainable energy.
He also announced that Morocco will host an international event in Agadir in June 2025, focused on «community forest management, technological innovation, and sustainable financing mechanisms». The event aims to «promote the exchange of experiences and best practices, identify shared challenges, and propose concrete actions in line with the Forum’s objectives».
Additionally, Morocco was elected in May 2024 to serve on the Forum’s bureau for the 2024–2026 biennium, representing the African continent. Since its creation in 2000 by the United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC), the UNFF has worked to promote the management, conservation, and sustainable development of all types of forests around the world.
