Two people were killed and three others injured during a shooting late Saturday night at a Moroccan wedding in Goult, in France’s Vaucluse region. The bride, 27 years old, was among those killed. According to initial reports cited by AFP, the couple, both from the Moroccan community, were targeted by masked attackers as the bride and groom were leaving the celebration by car, which also carried a 13-year-old child.
Among the injured, Le Figaro reports that the groom and the child remain in serious condition as of Sunday. Meanwhile, one of the assailants was killed after being run over by the fleeing couple’s car. The Avignon prosecutor’s office has opened a judicial investigation into «murder and attempted murder by an organized group».
At this stage, authorities have not ruled out any theories, including the «likely» possibility that the shooting was a settling of scores linked to drug trafficking, according to French media. The groom, 25, is known to law enforcement and reportedly has 26 entries in the Criminal Records Processing System (TAJ).
Speaking at a press conference Sunday, Goult’s mayor, Didier Perello, said he felt «angry, outraged, and shocked». According to the prosecutor’s office and the gendarmerie, 28 individuals are «involved» in the shooting, matching the number of people present in the hall at the time of the incident.
