The Spanish National Police have arrested a woman at the Ceuta-Morocco border checkpoint after discovering she was accompanied by two minors who had been reported missing and were subject to protection orders issued by Belgian authorities. The arrest came after it was confirmed that the woman was the subject of a European arrest and extradition warrant issued by Belgium, on charges of kidnapping, unlawful detention, and hostage-taking.
Once her identity was verified, Spanish police took custody of the children in accordance with the protection order and promptly notified Belgian authorities. The suspect is expected to appear before the Court of First Instance No. 1 in Ceuta, which is currently on duty, before the case is referred to the Central Court of First Instance in Madrid, according to Spanish media reports.
The incident occurred within the context of Operation Marhaba (also known as the Strait Crossing Operation), during which the National Police have reinforced their presence at the Tarajal border crossing to monitor individuals more closely and ensure smoother traffic flow.
