In the Tindouf camps, Bachir Mustapha Sayed is actively campaigning for leadership. Without questioning the Polisario Front’s decision to launch a «war» against Morocco on November 13, 2020, he now advocates for its continuation, drawing inspiration from the military tactics of Hamas, the Palestinian Islamist movement.
The brother of the Polisario Front’s founder praised the leaders of the Al-Qassam Brigades, describing their command as «exceptional for a religious movement». To confront the Royal Armed Forces (FAR), Bachir Sayed is calling on the Front’s militias to dig tunnels and carry out rapid, targeted attacks on Moroccan positions.
He has also previously expressed frustration over Algeria’s refusal to supply arms to the movement. According to him, the Algerian government «does not wish for the war with Morocco to exceed a certain threshold, fearing it may harm its own interests», he said during a Polisario general secretariat meeting held in late January in the Tindouf camps.
It is worth noting that the Algerian president stated in an interview with a French outlet that «the Sahrawis are requesting weapons that we refrain from providing them for the moment».
Bachir Mustapha Sayed’s praise for Hamas comes at a delicate time for the Polisario, particularly following the loss of support from Bashar al-Assad’s regime after its fall in Syria.
Like the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps and Lebanon’s Hezbollah, Hamas is designated as a terrorist organization by both the European Union and the United States.
