The Spanish National Police in Malaga seized 1,579 kilograms of hashish originating from Morocco. The drugs were ingeniously concealed within a truck that appeared to be transporting a shipment of oranges. This operation is considered one of the most significant blows to drug trafficking networks in the area this year, as reported by Spanish media outlets.
Investigators were taken aback by the smugglers' creative tactics. The hashish was packed into balls wrapped in orange-colored plastic, meticulously crafted to resemble real oranges, in an effort to slip past highway inspections undetected.
Authorities had been surveilling the truck when they observed a small car trailing it. The car's two occupants appeared nervous and were engaging in counter-surveillance maneuvers, a typical strategy employed by criminal networks to keep tabs on their shipments.
When police moved to intercept the vehicles, the occupants of the small car fled the scene at high speed. However, law enforcement successfully stopped the truck at one of the highway exits.
The truck driver and his assistant were arrested and are now in pre-trial detention after being presented to the judiciary. Meanwhile, investigations continue to track down the individuals who escaped in the small car and to dismantle the broader criminal network.
