The recent shift in MEP Rima Hassan's stance on the Sahara issue has sparked concern among Polisario supporters across Europe. This is particularly evident in the reaction of Tesh Sidi, a Spanish deputy of Sahrawi origin from the far-left coalition Sumar.
On the social media platform X, Tesh Sidi described Rima Hassan's position as «painful». «We cannot ignore or minimize the anti-colonial struggle of the Sahrawi people, who have endured over 50 years of Moroccan occupation and, prior to that, 100 years of Spanish colonial rule», she asserted.
The Sumar deputy, a staunch supporter of the Polisario Front, expressed hope that the Franco-Palestinian MEP from La France Insoumise's recent statement «does not undermine our cause and is not driven by an electoral strategy that may resonate in France but disregards the reality on the ground».
Tesh Sidi also raised concerns about the potential impact of Rima Hassan's position on «key decisions in the European Parliament regarding Western Sahara, such as association agreements, where Moroccan lobbying is particularly influential».
She stressed that these developments could also affect «the left-wing group, The Left, with whom we share space in the European Parliament».
While the Polisario press has yet to comment on the Franco-Palestinian MEP's statement, the few Algerian media outlets that have covered the issue have approached it from the perspective of Israeli influence, as seen in reports by TSA and an Arabic-language online newspaper, while omitting Rima Hassan's comments that are less favorable to the Algerian stance on Western Sahara.
