Seventeen people were killed and 21 others seriously injured on Wednesday, September 3, in Portugal after the derailment of Lisbon’s iconic Gloria funicular. The accident occurred in the evening when the funicular, which links Rossio Square to Bairro Alto, sped uncontrollably down a steep slope before crashing violently into a building.
According to municipal civil protection chief Margarida Castro, at least 11 foreign nationals were among the injured, including a Moroccan, as well as citizens from Germany, Spain, France, Italy, Switzerland, Canada, South Korea, and Cape Verde, AFP reported.
Built in 1885 and electrified in 1915, the Gloria funicular is one of Lisbon’s most popular tourist attractions. Authorities have opened an investigation into the cause of the derailment, while the city’s transport operator Carris stressed that «all maintenance protocols» had been respected, noting that the last major overhaul was carried out in 2024.
Thursday has been declared a day of national mourning following the tragedy.
