On Thursday, August 4th, in Algiers, Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune inaugurated the 4th edition of the Intra-African Trade Fair (IATF 2025). In his opening speech, he expressed optimism about the future, stating, «Within five or six years at the latest, we envision Algerian ports becoming key transit hubs for goods from landlocked African nations. These goods could be transported by train to our ports in just twenty-four hours. That’s the plan.»

During his twenty-minute address, President Tebboune candidly admitted that Algeria had previously «turned its back on Africa» and pledged to his African counterparts that this approach would change.

On November 6, 2023, during the Green March celebrations, King Mohammed VI announced an initiative to enhance access for Sahel countries to the Atlantic Ocean. By December 23, 2023, during a meeting in Marrakech, Mali, Niger, Burkina Faso, and Chad had officially endorsed this royal proposal. Since then, Morocco and these nations have engaged in numerous expert discussions to advance the project.

Meanwhile, relations between Algeria and the Sahel countries remain strained.
