The Paris prosecutor’s office announced on Wednesday that the nine pig heads found outside mosques in the region the previous day were placed there by foreigners who have since left French territory. Initially, five incidents were reported, including one pig head marked with the word «MACRON» painted in blue.

Citing AFP, the prosecutor’s office confirmed information first reported by BFM TV, which revealed that a farmer in Normandy had told police he sold around ten pig heads to two individuals. Their vehicle was registered in Serbia, raising suspicions of foreign interference.

The prosecutor’s office added that the same vehicle was spotted in Paris on the night of Monday to Tuesday through video surveillance. Footage showed two people placing the pig heads in front of several mosques.

The suspects also reportedly used a Croatian phone line, which was traced near the French-Belgian border on Tuesday morning, shortly after the incidents.

The prosecutor’s office said investigations are continuing on charges of «intentional violence without incapacity, committed on account of the victim’s real or presumed religious affiliation, with the aim of serving the interests of a foreign power, company, or organization under foreign control». This offense carries a prison sentence of up to six years.

Investigators are also examining possible charges of «public incitement to hatred or violence on religious grounds».
