The National Union of Higher Education (SNE-Sup) has declared a 24-hour precautionary strike set for Monday, aimed at opposing Bill 59.24. This action, scheduled for September 17, 2025, follows a union meeting amidst a backdrop of heightened tensions as the new academic year begins, with this bill at the center of higher education reform debates.
The strike is part of a broader protest strategy endorsed by SNE-Sup, which includes sit-ins, marches, and even the suspension of roles in elected bodies. The union is poised to escalate its actions depending on how the situation unfolds, yet it emphasizes its dedication to «ensure the smooth running of the academic year». In this spirit, the union has urged educators to continue their supervisory roles, adhering to the pedagogical standards established during the 2023/2024 academic year.
Bill 59.24, which addresses the reform of higher education and scientific research, received the green light from the Council of Government on August 28. While some aspects are already being rolled out by universities in anticipation of the 2025/26 academic year, several elements remain contentious.
In the lead-up to the academic year, students have also signaled their readiness to mobilize, with potential strike actions on the horizon.
