A protest is scheduled for Friday, September 19, at noon, in front of the government delegation headquarters in Cadiz, Spain. Organized by the Human Rights and Protection of Migrants and Refugees Association in Jerez de la Frontera, the demonstration will also involve the Andalusian Human Rights Defense Association. The rally is intended to express solidarity with lawyer and former minister Mohamed Ziane, who faces a three-year prison sentence.

The organizers stress that their initiative is a gesture of support for Ziane, born in Málaga in 1943 to a Spanish mother. In his youth, he took part in a student movement opposing Franco’s regime, which led to a death sentence in Spain. He later fled to Morocco, where he settled in Tangier, pursued a career in law, and went on to serve as Minister of Human Rights under the late King Hassan II.

Notably, the Court of Appeals in Rabat reduced Ziane’s sentence from five years to three last May, in a case involving the «misappropriation of funds of the Moroccan Liberal Party». He is currently serving his sentence in Al-Arjat Prison.
