The Secretary-General of the PJD has once again voiced concern over Donald Trump’s return to the White House. «The United States is under the leadership of an unpredictable figure. No one can foresee what Trump might announce or do», Abdelilah Benkirane said Saturday at the opening of his party’s 19th youth forum.
Benkirane has previously described some of the 47th U.S. president’s initiatives as «threats», particularly Trump’s proposal to relocate the Palestinian population from Gaza to other Arab countries such as Egypt and Jordan. «How are we going to navigate this challenging period?» he asked. «In such circumstances, we might one day be forced to dig tunnels», he remarked last March during an internal party meeting. «Trump bullies the Europeans and threatens the Chinese. He doesn’t even care if we exist», he added.
Back in October 2016, while still serving as head of government, Benkirane expressed his preference for Hillary Clinton to win the U.S. presidential election against Trump. «It would be in the interest of Moroccan-American relations. On the other hand, Donald Trump scares me a little», he confided in an interview with an American Arabic-language media outlet.
