A Scots holidaymaker’s Moroccan getaway took an absurd turn when she was deported after Ryanair staff refused to let her back on the plane to fetch her passport.
Rebecca McCurry, 22, from Lochgilphead in Scotland, had just landed in Marrakech on July 31 with three friends when she realised, within «five minutes», that her passport was still on her seat. «Immediately after I got off the plane, I realised I had left my passport on my seat. Keeping my passport on me is my responsibility, obviously. But I was away from it for five minutes before I realised», she told local media on Wednesday.
She asked staff to let her get it herself, but was told not to worry, until Ryanair returned claiming the passport wasn’t on board. «I just knew that was impossible», she added. Sure enough, passengers on the return flight later found it exactly where she’d left it.
Instead of solving the problem, McCurry was escorted to face four border police officers who, she says, warned she might have to wait five days for a deportation flight, while the plane she had arrived on was still sitting on the runway.
Stress and chronic pain left her fainting «multiple times» during what she calls an 11-hour ordeal. «Honestly it was terrifying. I did not feel like a person at all. It was just insane», she said.
When she was finally deported, it wasn’t even to Edinburgh but to Manchester, forcing her father to drive six hours to collect her. Her passport only resurfaced weeks later, after much chasing and a £30 fee at the airport, she said.
Ryanair, for its part, commented on the situation : «This passenger misplaced their passport on board their flight from Edinburgh to Marrakech … and was correctly denied entry».
