Last night at UN headquarters, Moroccan Foreign Minister Nasser Bourita met with Kenya’s Prime Minister and Foreign Minister, Musalia Mudavadi.
Talks centered largely on the Sahara issue. The Kenyan official reaffirmed that Morocco’s 2007 autonomy initiative «constitutes a significant step forward» toward resolving the regional dispute. He added that the initiative «deserves special attention and could pave the way» for progress on several aspects of the conflict, according to a statement from Moroccan diplomacy.
Mudavadi had already voiced this position on May 26 in Rabat, following a working meeting with Bourita. That meeting concluded with a joint statement in which Kenya described the autonomy plan as the «only viable approach» to resolving the Sahara issue.
It is worth noting that Kenya continues to recognize the self-proclaimed «Sahrawi Republic» with a Polisario representative, styled as an «ambassador», based in Nairobi.
