Geneva : Cimea75 reveals new findings on the 1975 expulsion of Moroccans from Algeria

The International Collective in Support of Moroccan Families Expelled from Algeria in 1975 (Cimea) will hold a press conference on Wednesday, October 1, at 12:00 PM, at the Swiss Press Club in Geneva, Switzerland. The event coincides with the fiftieth anniversary of the arbitrary expulsion of Moroccans from Algeria and will focus on the «presentation of a groundbreaking report prepared by Cimea, containing precise and documented data, made public for the first time» since the operation carried out by the regime of Houari Boumédiène, according to a statement.

The report revisits cases of expulsions carried out in violation of international law. «It specifies that the victims were separated from their loved ones, gathered in centers, stripped of their belongings, and then expelled under miserable conditions, in the harsh winter, to the Moroccan-Algerian border», the statement emphasizes. Fifty years later, «this human tragedy remains largely absent from scientific research and memory policies, and no official acknowledgment has been issued by the Algerian authorities», notes Cimea.

The conference will also feature the presentation of a study titled Memory Against Oblivion: For the Recognition of the Expulsion of Moroccan Families from Algeria in 1975. The study «traces the historical context and events surrounding the arbitrary expulsion of Moroccans from Algeria, as well as the legal and human rights situation, based on rigorous scientific research supported by reliable documents, facts, and information, made public for the first time».

It is based in particular on «a legal and human rights analysis, conducted in light of Algerian legislation regarding the status of foreigners and bilateral commitments, in conjunction with international law».

The meeting will be led by human rights activist Abderrazak Hannouchi, a member of the executive board of the Collective. Mohamed Charfaoui, president of the International Collective, will present a summary of the report and the conclusions of the study, while Houcine Bouasria, also a member of the executive board and himself a victim of the expulsion, will provide a direct testimony.
