As anticipated, Driss Lachgar has been reappointed as First Secretary of the Socialist Union of Popular Forces (USFP) for another four-year term. The decision follows the lifting of term-limit restrictions earlier today, clearing the way for his re-election.

This development comes after the party’s 12th Congress, held in Bouznika, overwhelmingly approved a proposal from the National Council to amend Article 217 of the internal statutes and Article 212 of the internal regulations. Both articles had previously restricted the number of terms for members of all party structures.

The congress thus reaffirms Driss Lachgar’s firm control over the socialist party. The 71-year-old leader, who has headed the USFP since 2012, will now have full latitude to form the new Political Bureau, drawing from among his loyal supporters.

The USFP’s 12th Congress runs from October 17 to 19 in Bouznika.
