Polisario Front criticizes U.S. draft UN Security Council resolution on the Sahara

The Polisario Front has reacted sharply to the draft resolution on Western Sahara circulated among members of the United Nations Security Council, which cites Morocco’s autonomy initiative as the sole framework for negotiations to end the decades-long conflict.

Mohamed Bukhari, an advisor to the Polisario leader, claimed in an article published by the separatist front’s news agency that since 2020, the United States has been «trying to hand over Western Sahara to Morocco». He added, «It seems Washington is in a hurry—or certain lobbies are—to have the Security Council endorse this concoction and blatant theft», as he described it.

Bukhari went on to say that «the Security Council does not belong to America or France alone and will not accept being turned into a company for distributing land while trampling on the principles of the United Nations», criticizing what he called a breach of international legitimacy.

He rejected Morocco’s autonomy plan outright, declaring it would «never be a basis for a solution, even if the sun rose from the west», urging the United States to adopt «balanced positions rooted in justice and respect for the rights of all peoples within their recognized borders».

Bukhari further denounced what he called «a unilateral American paper» that remains «unofficial», describing it as «contradictory to the consensual and practical framework agreed upon in 1991», when the Security Council established MINURSO to implement the ceasefire and the referendum process.

Meanwhile, Polisario’s representative to the United Nations, Sidi Mohamed Ammar, argued that the content of the document «reflects the U.S. position alone, well known to all, and not that of the full fifteen members of the Security Council».

He added that «since the era of President Gerald Ford and Secretary of State Henry Kissinger, America has consistently supported Morocco’s occupation of Western Sahara».

The Polisario Front has repeatedly dismissed Washington’s recognition of Moroccan sovereignty over the Sahara—announced on December 10, 2020—as «merely a tweet» posted on the social media platform now known as X.
