It's now official. The Polisario Front has conceded that the Royal Armed Forces (FAR) have taken back control of 40 square kilometers of what it calls its «liberated territories». This admission comes directly from its leader, Brahim Ghali, in a letter sent this Wednesday, October 22, to United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres.

In the letter, the Front's leader claims that Morocco «has built a new sand wall approximately 20 kilometers long at El Guerguerate and has bolstered its presence over an area of about 40 square kilometers in the buffer zone».

This acknowledgment marks a setback for the Polisario, which has consistently issued triumphant statements celebrating the supposed «victories» of its militias against the «Moroccan occupation forces» since the ceasefire was broken on November 13, 2020.

It is worth noting that the Polisario's representative in New York had already admitted during a closed-door meeting of the Front's general secretariat, held on January 3 and 4, 2025, in the Tindouf camps, that «since November 13, 2020, the date of the Polisario's withdrawal from the 1991 ceasefire agreement, the Royal Armed Forces (FAR) have reclaimed 40 square kilometers of the liberated territories of the Sahrawi Republic».

Earlier, in June 2022, Mohamed Ibrahim Biadillah, a former coordinator of the Polisario's armed militias and now «ambassador» to Cuba, had already raised the alarm. He warned of the gradual expansion of the FAR in the «liberated territories», expressing concern that this area east of the Sand Wall could become a genuine «security belt for Morocco».

Since November 13, 2020, the Polisario has been forced to vacate all its «liberated territories». The Front had seized control of these areas following the ceasefire brokered by the UN, which took effect on September 26, 1991.
