The United Nations Security Council was set to vote today, Thursday, on a new draft resolution concerning the Sahara, but the vote has been postponed to tomorrow, Friday, October 31, at 3:05 p.m. New York time.
The postponement was due to an emergency meeting scheduled Thursday to address the situation in Sudan.
This delay mirrors last year’s events, when the vote on Resolution 2756 was also postponed to October 31 before being adopted with 12 votes in favor. Russia and Mozambique abstained, while Algeria boycotted the session after two of its proposed amendments were rejected.
For the new resolution to be adopted, it must receive at least nine votes out of fifteen, provided that none of the five permanent members exercise their veto power. If one of them abstains, the resolution may still pass if it secures the required majority.
