The Minister of the Interior, Abdelouafi Laftit, has issued a forceful warning against the illegal seizure of land belonging to local communities and the misappropriation of public funds. «Anyone who has taken over a piece of land or even a single dirham will have to return it, as they will be severely punished», he declared on Wednesday, November 5, during the review of his department's budget by the Interior and Local Authorities Committee at the House of Representatives.

«We will take them to court. They will not go unpunished», the minister emphasized, criticizing «a minority of elected officials who serve neither the community nor the authorities and fail in their duties». Laftit also highlighted the inaction of «certain elected officials who do not defend the rights of the community in court», arguing that such behavior «harms the integrity of honest officials».

According to data released on Monday by the Ministry of the Interior, 302 legal actions were initiated in 2025 against elected officials. These cases involve 69 former presidents of municipal councils, 57 vice-presidents, 52 current presidents of local councils, and 124 municipal councilors.

The department, under Laftit's leadership, also announced the dismissal of 63 elected officials in 2025, including 20 presidents of territorial councils, 36 vice-presidents, and 7 members of professional chambers.

Furthermore, following complaints filed by the Ministry of the Interior, the judiciary has ordered the dissolution of eight local councils due to dysfunctions affecting their management, internal divisions, conflicts, and obstacles harming the interests of citizens and the proper functioning of local institutions.
