Spain : Pedro Sanchez dodges questions on the Sahara in the House of Representatives
DR

The Spanish Prime Minister, Pedro Sanchez, has avoided addressing questions raised, notably by his allies, concerning the recent United Nations Security Council resolution on Western Sahara.

During the plenary session on November 12 in the House of Representatives, MPs from the far-left coalition Sumar, Podemos, as well as Basque separatists from EH Bildu, all supporters of the Polisario, questioned the Prime Minister on this matter. They also brought up the provisional agricultural agreement concluded between Morocco and the European Union, which includes products originating from the Sahara.

Pedro Sanchez limited himself to sending a firm message to his partners: «This game of pretending not to be in government while actually being part of it does not work very well. They will do what they want if they wish to criticize the government and all its ministries.»

«Can you imagine us (the socialists, ed.) doing the same with Sumar's ministers? No, we are very clear about the general interest and the objective of this progressive coalition government.»

Pedro Sanchez

MPs from Sumar, Podemos, and EH Bildu have called on the head of government to withdraw his support for the Moroccan autonomy plan for the Sahara. Having received no response from Pedro Sanchez, they hope to revisit the issue during the next appearance of the Minister of Foreign Affairs, José Manuel Albares, dedicated to the Sahara question.

The Sumar, Podemos, EH Bildu, Galician Nationalist Bloc, and Catalan Republican Left parties have supported the current government led by Pedro Sanchez since November 25, 2023.
