On Monday, the UN Security Council adopted a resolution backing President Donald Trump’s plan to end the conflict in Gaza. The text passed with 13 votes in favor and two abstentions from Russia and China. Algeria, a non-permanent member of the Council, set aside its traditional pro-Palestinian rhetoric to align with Trump’s proposal, an unexpected shift that drew praise from the U.S. ambassador in Algiers.
«The United States appreciates Algeria’s continued engagement and constructive dialogue at the UN Security Council as we pursue diplomatic solutions that advance peace and security in the region», Elizabeth Moore Aubin wrote on social media.
The vote has stirred significant controversy in Algeria. Abderrazzak Makri, former president of the Movement for the Society of Peace (MSP), openly criticized the government’s decision, while many Palestinians expressed their dismay online.
Trump’s plan includes the creation of a «Peace Council», a transitional authority overseeing Gaza’s reconstruction until the Palestinian Authority completes its reform program and can «safely and properly» resume control of the territory.
Algiers’ Indirect Support for Israel
The roadmap, 20 points negotiated months earlier between Trump and the Israeli Prime Minister at the White House, also calls for an «international stabilization force» in Gaza, deployed on a temporary basis under a unified command. This force would work with Israel, Egypt, and Palestinian police to secure border areas, demilitarize the Strip, dismantle military and terrorist infrastructures, and protect civilians during humanitarian operations.
Trump’s plan explicitly excludes Hamas and Islamic Jihad from any post-war governance. Both factions had urged Algeria not to vote for Resolution 2803, but their appeals were ignored.
Facing mounting criticism, the official APS news agency attempted to defend the government’s stance in a lengthy article. «A strong national state cannot be swayed by the whims or impulses of anyone. The foreign policy of the Algerian state is rooted in the Constitution, which grants this domain exclusively to the President of the Republic», APS asserted.
Meanwhile, Foreign Minister Ahmed Attaf told reporters that «Algeria voted in favor of this resolution based on a set of objective considerations related firstly to the essential aims of the text, secondly to its background, and thirdly to the positions of key regional actors». He dismissed statements attributed to Palestinian factions condemning Algeria’s vote as being of «unknown origin». Algeria hosts an official Hamas representation.
This is not the first time Algiers has shown leniency toward Donald Trump. The intervention of its ambassador on October 31, after the adoption of Resolution 2797 on Western Sahara, is a notable example.
The Algerian government has long presented two pillars of its foreign policy: support for the Palestinian cause and backing for the Polisario Front.
