Members of the Spanish People’s Party (PP) in Gran Canaria held a meeting with representatives of the Polisario Front, during which they reiterated their support for the movement and urged the Spanish government to reverse its position in favor of Morocco.

Carmelo Barrio, a PP member of parliament, said that international law and United Nations resolutions must remain the foundation for resolving the conflict. He criticized Madrid for continuing to support the «Moroccan proposal» and called on Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez to explain the reasons behind Spain’s change of position on the Sahara in 2022.

He recalled that Parliament had approved two motions on the issue: one calling for increased aid to the refugee camps and rejecting support for the Moroccan autonomy plan, and another supporting the organization of a self-determination referendum.

For his part, Carmelo Ramirez, the Solidarity Advisor of the Gran Canaria Island Council, stated that the PP itself had requested the meeting in order to assess the political and on-the-ground situation in Western Sahara. He also denied that the latest UN Security Council resolution recognized Moroccan sovereignty over the territory.

In the same vein, the Polisario Front’s representative in the Canary Islands argued that the conflict would not exist had Spain completed the decolonization process. He claimed that the current situation has resulted in the dispersal of Sahrawis between refugee camps in Algeria and areas under Moroccan administration.
