US embassy delegation visits Dakhla to boost development and consular plans
DR

A delegation from the United States Embassy in Rabat, spearheaded by General Affairs Counselor Nick Barnett, recently visited Dakhla. During their visit, the American officials held discussions with Raghib Hormatallah, president of the city's communal council, focusing on the ongoing development projects in Dakhla, as announced by the American embassy.

This visit, officially confirmed by American authorities, follows just weeks after the late October arrival of a U.S. consular delegation, which was tasked with preparations for opening a consulate in Dakhla. This initiative was reignited after Donald Trump resumed the U.S. presidency in January 2025. It's worth noting that the current president originally announced the establishment of a diplomatic mission in the city on December 10, 2020, but the plan was shelved during Joe Biden's administration.

The establishment of an American consulate in Dakhla aligns with the United States' strategic aim to enhance American investments, both public and private, in the Sahara region. This commitment was reaffirmed by Deputy Secretary of State Christopher Landau in a press statement following his meeting with Moroccan Foreign Minister Nasser Bourita on September 25 in New York, during the 80th session of the UN General Assembly.
