Moroccan international Nayef Aguerd is set to return to the pitch after a brief injury absence, good news for both Olympique de Marseille and the Moroccan national team, according to Foot Mercato.
The Atlas Lions defender was injured during Marseille’s 3–0 win over Brest, later diagnosed as the early stages of a groin issue. Although initially included in the national team squad for the international break, Walid Regragui opted to release him from duty to ensure proper rest and avoid aggravating the injury. The decision was seen as crucial, especially given that Italian coach Roberto De Zerbi had stressed the importance of managing Aguerd with care due to his excellent form since the start of the season.
Aguerd missed the matches against Nice and Newcastle, but team sources now indicate that he has fully recovered and is eager to reclaim his starting spot. De Zerbi is expected to field him in Saturday’s Ligue 1 game against Toulouse, particularly as Marseille’s defense is in need of greater stability at this point in the season.
His return comes at a pivotal moment, with the sports community closely watching ahead of the Africa Cup of Nations, which begins in just a few weeks. Regragui is counting on Aguerd as a key defensive pillar in Morocco’s pursuit of a continental title that has eluded the national team since 1976.
