Following in the footsteps of Abdelilah Benkirane, the Movement of Unity and Reform (MUR) has voiced its rejection of a recent announcement by the Movement for the Self-Determination of Kabylie, made from Paris, which called for the separation and independence of the Kabylie region in Algeria and the creation of a so-called «Federal Republic of Kabylie».

In a statement, the movement, known to be close to Morocco’s Justice and Development Party (PJD), said it «rejects this announcement based on its principled position against all projects of division and fragmentation», reaffirming its commitment to «respect for the sovereignty and territorial integrity of states».

Earlier, the Secretary-General of the PJD, Abdelilah Benkirane, addressed the issue during a meeting of the party’s general secretariat on Saturday, describing the declaration of Kabylie's independence as the beginning of «the implementation of colonial conspiracies against Muslim countries». He denounced it as «a grave mistake, a serious violation, and a great evil», adding: «We are already divided enough».

Benkirane further argued that secession is impermissible under Islamic law, stating that «we are one nation».
