The Unified Socialist Party (PSU) appears to be rekindling the dynamics of political factions. El Alami Lahrouni, leader of the party's Temara branch, is emerging as the figurehead of a group of activists gathered under the banner of the «renewed left».
«Although the current political bureau of the PSU has suspended political factions, this group has continued its activities from Temara. Its members are very active, particularly through initiatives supporting human rights and backing protest movements in Morocco. This mobilization often contrasts with the PSU's absence on the ground. The group operates independently, making decisions without consulting the party leadership», an internal PSU source told Yabiladi.
«El Alami Lahrouni aspired to succeed Nabila Mounib as the head of the PSU during the October 2023 congress. However, it was Jamal El Asri who was elected to lead the party, with Ms. Mounib as the second in command. A division of roles that Lahrouni reportedly did not accept», the same source added.
Unlike previous experiences with factions, often led by leftist figures who joined the PSU through successive mergers, El Alami Lahrouni hails from the OADP (Organization of Popular Democratic Action), founded in 1983 by the late Mohamed Bensaid Aït Idder.
