Moroccan Bar Association announces nationwide strike

The Moroccan Bar Association (ABAM) has announced a nationwide strike on Tuesday, January 6, following an extraordinary meeting of its national council held on Saturday in Marrakech. The decision comes in response to a draft law prepared by the Minister of Justice aimed at reorganizing the legal profession.

In a statement, the ABAM described the draft as a «serious and irresponsible violation» of the profession’s observations, as well as of agreements previously reached through parliamentary mediation. The association denounced what it sees as a forceful push by the Justice Ministry, accusing it of deliberately disregarding commitments made to lawyers’ representatives.

The ABAM reiterated its «categorical rejection of the draft law governing the legal profession», warning that it poses «a serious threat to the independence of the profession and a challenge to its universal foundations».

The association also called for the immediate withdrawal of the draft, holding Abdellatif Ouahbi, Minister of Justice, primarily responsible for escalating tensions between the two sides.

Last week, during a session of the Chamber of Advisors, Ouahbi declined to answer an oral question from advisor Chafika Lachraf concerning his department’s alleged failure to honor commitments related to the controversial bill. The minister justified his refusal by stating that the question raised did not correspond to the version formally transmitted to his department by the chamber’s office.

This latest development signals a prolonged standoff between the government and the legal profession.
