The confrontation between lawyers and the government is escalating. Following the approval of the bill to restructure the legal profession on Thursday, January 8, introduced by Justice Minister Abdellatif Ouahbi, the Association of Moroccan Bar Associations (ABAM) has declared a nationwide six-day strike.
Lawyers will suspend their activities on January 15 and 16, January 20 and 21, as well as January 28 and 29. These measures, which could bring courts across the Kingdom to a standstill, will be accompanied by sit-ins in several Moroccan cities.
Simultaneously, the ABAM board has resolved to hold a national symposium on January 15 to examine and discuss the contentious bill.
It is worth noting that the Association of Moroccan Bar Associations had already staged a national strike on January 6, just two days before the government of Akhannouch endorsed the bill. During that protest, the ABAM accused the Justice Minister of a «serious and irresponsible breach» of the feedback provided by the legal community, as well as of reneging on agreements reached through parliamentary mediation.
The Association also criticized the Justice Ministry's heavy-handed tactics, arguing that the bill blatantly disregards commitments made with lawyers' representatives, thereby setting the stage for a profound crisis between the legal profession and the government.
