In his first reaction following Morocco’s 1–0 defeat to Senegal in the Africa Cup of Nations final, Moroccan star Brahim Diaz expressed deep emotion and regret. «My soul aches. I dreamed of this title because of all the love you showed me, every message, every gesture of support that made me feel I was not alone. I fought with everything I had, with my heart above all», he wrote.
The Real Madrid forward, who missed a penalty in the final moments of the match, added in a post on his Instagram account: «I failed yesterday, and I take full responsibility. I apologize from the bottom of my heart».
He continued, «It will be difficult for me to get back up, as this wound will not heal easily, but I will try, not for myself, but for everyone who believed in me, and for everyone who suffered alongside me».
Diaz concluded by saying, «I will keep moving forward until the day I can repay all this love and become a source of pride for my Moroccan people», ending his message with the words: «Dima Maghrib».
Despite the heartbreak of the final, Diaz leaves the tournament with a major individual accolade, having won the Golden Boot as the competition’s top scorer with five goals.
