As Donald Trump intensifies his campaign to promote his Peace Council initiative, the Canadian Prime Minister seized the opportunity at the Davos Forum to deliver a powerful speech. He challenged the post-World War II global order and advocated for establishing a new international framework.

In a moment of frankness, Mark Carney acknowledged: «We understood that the concept of a rule-based international order was partly a mirage… We knew international law was enforced inconsistently, depending on who was involved.»

«This illusion served us well [due to the benefits of American dominance]. We played along. Often, we avoided highlighting the disparity between rhetoric and reality. This pretense can no longer be sustained. Let's be clear: we are experiencing a rupture, not a transition.»

The Prime Minister also called on the «middle powers»—those not aligned with Donald Trump's vision—to come together. «If you're not at the table, you're on the menu. We must not let the rise of brute force blind us to the enduring strength of legitimacy, integrity, and rules, provided we uphold them collectively.»

Notably, Mark Carney's speech did not address the situation of poorer or developing nations.

As a reminder, upon his return to the White House in January 2025, Donald Trump openly stated his ambition to annex Canada.
