King Mohammed VI expressed, Thursday, «his gratitude to all the components of the Nation who admirably contributed to the complete success of this magnificent event», the African Cup of Nations, according to a statement from the Royal Cabinet.

The Sovereign was keen to «particularly congratulate all citizens across the different cities of the Kingdom for their efforts, and to thank each and every one of them for their wonderful contribution to this historic success, recognized and praised worldwide».

The King also extended «his compliments to the millions of Moroccans, women, men, and children, who supported, each in their own way and always in an exemplary manner, their national team, now ranked as the eighth-best team in the world». He described this achievement as «a remarkable result, the fruit of an ambitious, high-level sports and infrastructure policy, as well as the patriotic choice made by the talented children of Moroccans around the world to wear the national team’s jersey and defend its colors with pride and brilliance».

The Sovereign further acknowledged that «although this great continental football celebration hosted by the Kingdom was sadly marred by an unfortunate incident in the final minutes of the match between Morocco and Senegal, marked by regrettable incidents, once passions subside, inter-African brotherhood will naturally prevail». He stressed that «this Moroccan success is also an African success», adding that Morocco is proud to have offered, on its soil, «a month of popular joy and sporting emotion», and to have contributed to the radiance of Africa and its football.

King Mohammed VI also emphasized that «hostile intentions will never achieve their objectives, as the Moroccan people know how to put things into perspective and will not be drawn into resentment or discord». He underlined that «nothing can alter the closeness forged over centuries between our African peoples, nor the fruitful cooperation built with the countries of the continent, strengthened by increasingly ambitious partnerships».
