Press Law in Morocco: PPS and PJD welcome Constitutional Court's decision
DR

The Party of Progress and Socialism (PPS) has "welcomed positively" the decision of the Constitutional Court to annul several key provisions of law no. 026.25 concerning the reorganization of the National Press Council (CNP). The PPS political bureau stated that this law was "from the outset, deemed unconstitutional, incompatible with democratic principles, and a regression from the achievements in independent and democratic self-regulation of the journalistic profession."

The PPS highlighted that "despite the government's insistence and its numerical majority in both chambers of Parliament, it failed to pass this legislation. The government completely disregarded the appeals and observations of professionals, democratic political actors, and the opinions of national constitutional institutions, showcasing its usual tendency to push through laws in an overbearing manner."

The Party of Justice and Development (PJD) also lauded the decision by the kingdom's highest court. In a statement released on the occasion, the party emphasized that "the Constitutional Court affirms the press sector's right to self-regulation, rooted in democracy and representative pluralism, in alignment with the Constitution."

In light of this decision, the government is now urged to revisit and amend the provisions of the law that were rejected by the Constitutional Court.
