Six days after its delegation returned unsuccessfully from Washington, the Polisario Front has reiterated its rejection of Morocco’s autonomy plan for Western Sahara. This position was voiced by Oubi Bouchraya in statements to several international media outlets, including France 24 Arabic and the Mauritanian channel El Morabitoune.
These media appearances appear primarily aimed at reassuring the population in the Tindouf camps, particularly after the Polisario had pledged last week to the Trump administration to continue negotiations. At the same time, supporters of Brahim Ghali have been active on social media, seeking to reassure camp residents about the existence of «direct negotiations» between the Polisario and Morocco, with the stated objective of «organizing a referendum on self-determination for the Sahrawi people», while reaffirming Algeria’s unwavering support for their claims.
On Monday, during a United Nations Security Council meeting, the Trump administration reaffirmed its support for Morocco’s autonomy plan, presented in 2007, as a basis for resolving the regional dispute over the Sahara.
«On Western Sahara, the U.S.-penned resolution adopted in October resulted in the Council voicing strong support for negotiations to reach a mutually acceptable resolution based on Morocco’s credible and realistic Autonomy Proposal», said Tammy Bruce, deputy representative of the U.S. mission to the United Nations, during a debate on international law.
