The eighteen Senegalese football fans detained in Morocco and awaiting trial over hooliganism during the AFCON final in Rabat have launched a hunger strike, their lawyer said. Lawyer Patrick Kabou told AFP on Friday that the detainees have vowed to continue the hunger strike until their case is heard.
They argueed that they are being denied their «right to justice» and that they have been «waiting to learn the charges against them since January 18». Kabou added that the group complained police questioned them in French and Arabic, languages they do not understand, as they speak only Wolof.
The arrests followed incidents near the end of the match, when some Senegalese supporters attempted to storm the pitch in protest against a late penalty awarded to Morocco, briefly halting play. Objects, including a chair, were also thrown onto the field, injuring stadium security staff.
A first court hearing in late January was adjourned, while a second hearing scheduled for Thursday was postponed due to an ongoing lawyers’ strike in Morocco. The trial is expected to resume next week.
