Algeria and Niger have embarked on a new chapter in their diplomatic relations. On Thursday, President Abdelmadjid Tebboune ordered the return of the Algerian ambassador to Niamey. This move had been anticipated, particularly after Tebboune revealed on February 6, during remarks to local media, that he had invited President Abdourahamane Tiani for an official visit to Algeria. «I have a great deal of respect for its current president, Abdourahamane Tiani», Tebboune stated.
Algeria had condemned the coup d'état led by General Tiani in July 2023 against former President Mohamed Bazoum, who was perceived as very close to Algeria. Furthermore, the ambassador's return was foreshadowed by diplomatic efforts concentrated on hydrocarbons.
On January 26, Algerian Minister of Hydrocarbons and Mines, Mohamed Arkab, visited Niger to discuss reviving Sonatrach's activities in the country, as well as the trans-Saharan gas pipeline project designed to link Algeria, Niger, and Nigeria, which had been stalled since the coup.
As a reminder, Algeria recalled its ambassadors to Mali and Niger in April 2025, following accusations from the Alliance of Sahel States (AES) that it was supporting terrorism after a Malian drone was destroyed at its southern border. Bamako and Niamey subsequently took reciprocal measures.
