The activist Hicham Jerando found himself ensnared by Ibrahim Cherkaoui, a Tangier native residing in Spain who has gained notoriety on social media. With just a phone call, Cherkaoui managed to expose the methods of Jerando, a Canada-based opponent, highlighting his failure to verify information.
In a meticulously planned ruse, Cherkaoui reached out to Jerando, fabricating a story about two fictional characters, «Oncle Ali» and «Haloubou», who were allegedly planning to smuggle a hashish shipment via Sidi Qanqoush beach. Jerando, without checking the veracity of these claims, recorded the conversation and accepted the information as true.
Just hours later, on his news platform «Al-Tahadi» («The Challenge»), Jerando published a video addressing the Royal Gendarmerie, reiterating the fabricated details he had been fed. He presented these claims as serious disclosures, showing no skepticism or questioning their authenticity.
Ibrahim Cherkaoui subsequently released a video revealing the hoax, effectively demonstrating how easily unverified information can be spread and accepted as credible. He argued that this incident highlights a pattern of rushing to publish content without proper source verification.
