The Senegalese football body has strongly criticized the prison sentences handed down to 18 of its supporters following incidents during the AFCON 2025 final against Morocco. Speaking to AFP, Bacary Cissé, head of communications at the Senegalese Football Federation (FSF), described the ruling as «incomprehensibly severe» and «disproportionate», expressing «deep consternation» over the verdict.
«What we consider a blatant form of injustice against our compatriots is deeply troubling. Clashes occur in many stadiums around the world, including every weekend in Morocco, without leading to such sanctions», he argued. «The treatment reserved for these supporters therefore appears disproportionate», Cissé added.
Their lawyer, Me Patrick Kabou, also condemned the ruling, calling it «incomprehensible» and denouncing what he described as his clients being treated as «scapegoats».
The 18 supporters were sentenced on Thursday on charges of hooliganism, including violence against law enforcement, damage to sports facilities, pitch invasion, and throwing projectiles during the AFCON final.
Nine supporters were sentenced to one year in prison and fined 5,000 dirhams, six received six-month sentences with fines of 2,000 dirhams, and three were given three months and fined 1,000 dirhams.
