Thirteen Members of the European Parliament have co-signed a written query concerning the European Union's newly articulated position on Western Sahara. This stance was formally presented on January 29 in Brussels during the 15th session of the EU-Morocco Association Council.
In her response, released yesterday, the European Union's High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Kaja Kallas, reaffirmed the EU's support for negotiations grounded in «Morocco's autonomy proposal». This declaration closely resembles a previous statement given in response to a query by Irish MEP Lynn Boylan.
The signatories include eight Spanish MEPs: Irene Montero (The Left), Oihane Agirregoitia Martínez (Renew), Jaume Asens Llodrà (Greens/EFA), Pernando Barrena Arza (The Left), Estrella Galán (The Left), Vicent Marzà Ibáñez (Greens/EFA), Ana Miranda Paz (Greens/EFA), and Isabel Serra Sánchez (The Left).
Other signatories are German MEP Martin Günther (The Left), Belgian Rudi Kennes (Greens/EFA), Portuguese Joãó Oliveira (The Left), Austrian Andreas Schieder (S&D), who is the president of the Polisario friendship group in the European Parliament, and Irish MEP Lynn Boylan (The Left).
This initiative has garnered limited support, primarily attracting MEPs from leftist and green factions, with little traction among other major political groups in the European Parliament. Notably, no French MEPs, regardless of political alignment—left, right, or Renew—are among the signatories.
