On Monday in Nouakchott, Mauritanian President Mohamed Ould Cheikh El Ghazouani held talks with a Polisario delegation led by Hama Salama, the president of the so-called «Sahrawi parliament». According to a brief statement from the movement's press agency, the discussions centered on «cooperative relations and issues of common interest».
This visit is not linked to the ongoing discussions in Washington regarding Western Sahara. However, it comes just 48 hours after the Mauritanian army intercepted two vehicles and a truck belonging to Polisario militias on Saturday, following their incursion into Mauritanian territory.
Efforts by the Polisario to ease the latest tensions with Nouakchott have so far been unsuccessful. According to reliable sources, it was Algerian mediation that ultimately convinced the Mauritanian president to meet with the Front's delegation.
Hama Salama's visits to Nouakchott occur amid ongoing tensions. Last November, he traveled to Mauritania after armed Polisario elements entered Mauritanian territory, attempting to launch projectiles toward targets in Es-Smara.
Similarly, in May 2025, Hama Salama visited following the Mauritanian army's decision to close the border region of Labriga to block the passage of Polisario militias to the area east of the Moroccan defense wall.
