Morocco is poised to implement a future ban on the import of motorcycles with engines that can be modified, in a bid to curb this practice and enhance the enforcement of related infractions. Nacer Boulaajoul, the Director General of the National Road Safety Agency (NARSA), revealed these plans in an interview with Le360. This move is part of a broader road safety strategy set to unfold by 2030, aimed at reinforcing «regulation and legislation».

The decision is driven by a concerning statistic: 60% of motorcycle riders are involved in fatal accidents. Annually, the agency reports 4,000 road fatalities, encompassing both car and motorcycle drivers. NARSA's initiative underscores its dedication to addressing these violations, building on its earlier endorsement of using speedometers to penalize users of illegally modified motorcycles.

Last summer, the agency staunchly defended this campaign, citing the significant number of motorcyclists among road accident victims, who represent more than 40% of road deaths. Those caught making illegal modifications face fines ranging from 5,000 to 30,000 dirhams and prison sentences from three months to a year, as stipulated by the Highway Code.

This initiative by the Ministry of Transport and Logistics stirred controversy, prompting the head of government to announce its temporary suspension. A 12-month grace period has been granted to motorcyclists, allowing for a gradual transition supported by awareness campaigns.
