In the first round of France's municipal elections, Hervé Chevreau, the incumbent mayor of Épinay-sur-Seine, secured 50.87% of the vote. He has controversially vowed to demolish the town's mosque if re-elected, proposing to replace it with a small public square.

Anasse Kazib, national spokesperson for Permanent Revolution, has issued a stark warning to Chevreau, condemning what he describes as «disguised Islamophobia masked as bogus development projects».

«Election or not, I assure you that Hervé Chevreau is not ready for the level of mobilization that will occur in the city. The mosque has been funded by donations from Muslims for years,» wrote the activist and trade unionist over the weekend on the platform X.

As a supporter of the «Take Back Le Mans from Professional Politicians» list, Kazib argues that such a move would be unprecedented. «I have lived in Épinay for 18 years, and I have never seen a mayor lead such a consistent offensive against Muslims in a city,» he added, describing it as «an obsession for 20 years».

Chevreau's announcement has triggered a wave of mobilization among local stakeholders, who are calling for voters to block him at the polls. Despite this, his first-round success already guarantees his list half of the seats on the municipal council.

The remaining seats will be distributed among the lists that achieve at least 5% of the vote. Meanwhile, Kazib expresses concern over the «record levels of abstention» and the «exclusion» of foreigners from voting rights.
