At the request of Moroccan authorities, the visit of Alice Jill Edwards, the United Nations Special Rapporteur on torture and inhuman or degrading treatment, initially slated for March 23 to April 2, 2026, has been postponed.
«The government's decision follows a last-minute announcement declaring Monday, March 23, 2026, a public holiday for all state administrations and local authorities due to Eid al-Fitr. This development has complicated the rescheduling of crucial meetings. I will continue to collaborate with the government to establish new dates», stated Ms. Edwards.
Ms. Edwards expressed her gratitude to «all stakeholders involved in preparing this visit and organizing meetings in the country». She urged them to «keep sharing any pertinent information to help me further evaluate the situation in Morocco, pending the confirmation of new visit dates», she added.
The Special Rapporteur's agenda in the kingdom included a meeting on March 27 in Rabat with representatives of Moroccan associations. She was also set to visit Laayoune to engage with members of NGOs aligned with the Polisario.
During her time in Morocco, Alice Jill Edwards had also planned to meet with «government representatives, international organizations, including UN agencies, civil society members, NGOs, as well as victims and their families».
