The Polisario Front is on high alert over the potential fallout from its supporters aligning with Iranian positions in the ongoing conflict involving the United States and Israel since February 28. These concerns were highlighted in a message from Oubi Bachir, advisor to Brahim Ghali on natural resources, addressed to members of the Front.

“Sahrawi nationalist bloggers, particularly those linked to the Polisario Front, must exercise extreme caution when sharing news related to the Middle East. Emotional reactions on social media could harm the national cause,” he warned on X on Sunday, March 22.

“Every post, no matter how insignificant it may seem, risks fueling tensions that the Moroccan occupation could exploit to tarnish the image of the Polisario Front, level false accusations against it, and undermine its position, legitimacy, and negotiating capacity.”

Highlighting the sensitivity of the current international context, he stressed that “the situation is delicate and critical. Our struggle is existential: a fight for the freedom and self-determination of our people, and nothing else. Anything that could harm this cause, directly or indirectly, must be avoided.”

This warning comes as several Polisario-affiliated media outlets and Sahrawi internet users have voiced support for the Iranian regime, notably condemning what they describe as “American-Israeli aggression against Iran.”

The concerns raised by Brahim Ghali’s advisor also come amid renewed U.S. efforts to classify the Polisario as a terrorist organization. Following a bill introduced by Senator Ted Cruz, Jason D. Greenblatt, former White House special envoy for the Middle East, has also advocated for such a designation. These initiatives highlight alleged links between the Polisario, Iran, and regional actors such as Hezbollah to support their case.

The choice of Oubi Bachir to deliver this message appears strategic, given his significant influence among young Sahrawis.
