A United Nations delegation is set to arrive in Laayoune this Tuesday. Their mission: to draft a report for UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres on the ongoing restructuring of MINURSO, as mandated by Security Council resolution 2797, adopted on October 31.
Antonio Guterres is tasked with presenting a «strategic review regarding the future mandate of MINURSO, taking into account the outcome of negotiations» to the Security Council next April. In this context, discussions concerning the Sahara issue were held on February 8 and 9 at the United States Embassy in Madrid, followed by meetings on February 23 and 24 in Washington, involving representatives from Morocco, Algeria, the Polisario, and Mauritania. A third round of talks could bring these four parties together in the coming weeks.
This visit by high-ranking UN officials to Laayoune occurs just days after the United States officially announced its decision to «proceed with a strategic review» of MINURSO.
The Trump administration aims to terminate UN peacekeeping missions it considers «costly» and ineffective, such as MINURSO.
The Polisario is watching this restructuring with a sense of resignation. Its media outlets have yet to comment on the American administration's decisions in this regard.
As a reminder, a delegation from the Royal Armed Forces (FAR) recently engaged in discussions in New York with United Nations officials about the future of MINURSO.
