Police in Marrakech arrested a 39-year-old man with a criminal record on Tuesday afternoon, March 24, on suspicion of extortion and threats of violence, after a video of the incident circulated on social media.
The video was flagged by cyber surveillance services and shows the suspect extorting a foreign national in the historic medina of Marrakech. Initial checks confirmed that no complaint or official report had been filed regarding the incident.
A judicial investigation was subsequently opened under the supervision of the public prosecutor. Investigators were able to identify and arrest the suspect on the outskirts of Marrakech. He has since been taken in for questioning to establish the full circumstances of the case and determine the motives behind his actions.
