As previously reported by Yabiladi, Bachir Mustapha Sayed was officially appointed this Saturday, in the presence of Brahim Ghali, the president of the Polisario's parliament. He succeeds Hamma Salama, who was named last week as the head of the Front's armed militias.
This appointment strategically positions Bachir Mustapha Sayed, fueling his longstanding ambition to eventually become the president of the Polisario. This aspiration dates back to the death of his brother, Mustapha El Ouali, in June 1976, during an assault on a Mauritanian military post in Inchiri.
The role of parliament president holds significant sway, as it allows the holder to temporarily lead the movement. This was exemplified by Khatri Adouh, who assumed leadership of the Polisario following the death of Mohamed Abdelaziz in 2016.
Bachir Mustapha Sayed's appointment comes on the heels of recent military appointments by Brahim Ghali, which have favored his own tribe, the Rguibates, to which the new parliament president also belongs.
These new responsibilities may also see him leading the Polisario delegation in renewed discussions on the Sahara, spurred by the Trump administration's initiatives.
